I have been harassed, called ignorant and dirty, and told to go back to Africa even by Black Americans.
During the global Covid-19 pandemic, I have been a caregiver, an essential worker in nursing homes, juvenile institutions, and private residences. Yet, I am often treated as invisible and irrelevant, or as a terrifying threat, either because of the color of my skin, or because others see me as a thief stealing jobs from American workers.
More than once, I have asked myself what I’m doing here. I miss my family and country with an ache so acute that it’s often physical.
